The criteria for academic appointments vary by university and country, but generally, the following qualifications are required for the ranks of Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, and Instructor in university academic departments:

- Experience: Typically, 5-7 years of teaching and research experience.
- Research & Publications: A significant number of quality publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Teaching & Mentorship: Strong teaching record, student mentorship, and curriculum development.
- Grants & Funding: Evidence of securing research funding.
- Service & Leadership: Involvement in departmental or university committees, faculty governance, and professional organizations.

Assistant Professor
- Educational Qualification: A Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree.
- Experience: Typically, 0-5 years of postdoctoral or teaching experience.
- Research & Publications: Some published research in peer-reviewed journals.
- Teaching Ability: Demonstrated teaching potential, student engagement, and course development.
- Grants & Funding: Some involvement in research grant applications.
- Service & Involvement: Participation in departmental activities and academic service.

Instructor
- Educational Qualification: A Master’s degree (sometimes a Ph.D.) in the relevant field.
- Experience: Limited or no prior university teaching experience required.
- Teaching Focus: Primarily responsible for teaching undergraduate courses, with little or no research expectations.
- Service: May participate in departmental activities but with fewer responsibilities than tenure-track faculty.
