UNITWIN, short for the University Twinning and Networking Programme, was established in 1992 following a decision by UNESCO’s General Conference at its 26th session.
The UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Programme was created to advance research, training, and program development across UNESCO’s fields of expertise. By fostering university networks and promoting inter-university cooperation, the program facilitates knowledge transfer across borders. Since its inception, it has gained significant interest among Member States.
The UNITWIN Programme is designed to be forward-thinking and impactful in socio-economic development. UNESCO Chair and UNITWIN Network projects have contributed to the creation of new teaching programs, the generation of innovative research ideas, and the enhancement of existing university curricula while promoting cultural diversity.
Today 695 UNESCO Chairs and 68 UNITWIN Networks are established within the Programme, involving over 812 institutions in 128 countries.
Since the adoption of new strategic orientations for the UNITWIN Programme by the Executive Board at its 176th session in April 2007, emphasis has been placed on:
- The dual function of UNESCO Chairs and UNITWIN Networks as “think tanks” and “bridge builders” connecting academia, civil society, local communities, research, and policy-making.
- Realignment with UNESCO’s priorities (Medium Term Strategy for 2008-2013 (in pdf))
- Addressing geographic imbalances, which currently favor the Global North
- Encouraging triangular cooperation between the North and the Global South;
- Creation of regional or sub-regional poles of innovation and excellence;
- Closer cooperation with the United Nations University (UNU)
